Bins, compost and recycling
Compost: you can throw your left-over vegetables and fruit in the compost. Go out of the kitchen, down the steps, through the gates on your left and there is an oak tree on the corner. The compost is behind the oak tree.

The kitchen bins are divided between recycling and general rubbish. Please deposit your rubbish in the bins on the way down to Mouleydier, you’ll see them on your left as you drive down the Route du Château d’Eau.

Green bin for all glass bottles
Yellow bin for cardboard boxes, paper, packaging (cardboard, metal & plastic) & plastic bottles. Empty the contents of the bin bag into the recycling bin
Other rubbish: Tied securely in a black plastic bin bag. You will need the SMD3 card to open the rubbish bin – we get charged every time the card is used, so please only use it when the bag is full.
Blenders and food processers
There is a Magimix food processor, a Belville blender and a Nutribullet blender available.

Bonfires and outdoor fires
Please do not light any outdoor fires because of the risk of wild fires. Outdoor fires are illegal in the Dordogne from March to September, with a fine of €1,500 from the gendarmerie if caught.

Breakages
On checking out, please let us know if there are any breakages so that we can replace them. If you need something replaced during your holiday, please let us know.

Canoeing
There are two rivers you can canoe down, the Dordogne and the Vézère, the rivers meet in Limeuil. Canoeing down the Dordogne offers you the chance to see castles and villages, the Vézère is quieter and greener. From your starting location you can either start canoeing downstream and you’ll be brought back by minibus, or you can first be taken by minibus to your starting location and then you canoe back to your car. We suggest the latter as then you don’t have to hang around for the minibus at the end.

For the Dordogne, we suggest a rental company in Beynac or Castelnaud. You can then choose to go with the minibus to either Vitrac or Carsac (if you want a challenge). This way you’ll go past Domme, La Roque-Gageac, Castelnaud and Beynac with their castles, villages and limestone cliffs.

Vitrac to Castelnaud = 12 km about 2.5 hours
Vitrac to Beynac = 16 km about 3 hours
Carsac to Castelnaud = km about hours
Carsac to Beynac = 25 km about 4.5 hours

Here are some canoe companies you can look into hiring from:

Perigord Adventures et Loisir based both in Beynac and Vitrac

Canoe Rando Dordogne based in Beynac

Butterfly canoes based in Castelnaud

Canoës Loisirs based in Vitrac

Alternatively you can choose to canoe the Vézère from Limeuil, they will take you by minibus to your starting point and then you canoe back to Limeuil.

Be aware that children under the age of 5 are not allowed to canoe. The canoe company will provide life jackets and a plastic tub to keep your valuables dry in.

Doctors
If you need a doctor’s appointment, you can normally get a same or next-day appointment.
Your appointment will be made via the website or app Doctolib for a general doctor – médecin généraliste – who will see you online at a pharmacy.
Open Doctorlib; create an account and log-in; click on the ‘make an appointment’ button; when it asks what type of doctor you require, search for médecin généraliste or general doctor; when it asks for your location, type in 24520 (our postcode).
A list of doctors and then pharmacies will appear – for instance the pharmacy in Issigeac always has appointments and is only 25 minutes away. Click on it, choose the time and confirm the appointment.

When you go to the appointment, arrive 15 minutes early as there is lots of information you’ll be required to give before seeing the online doctor. When you start filling in the questions, you can change the language to English, and that will also enable you to be seen by a doctor who speaks English.

Your appointment will take place in a private room or booth with lots of equipment for taking your temperature, looking in your ear or at your tonsils! You’ll be instructed what to do, and at the end, a prescription “une ordonnance” will be printed for you. And as you’re in a pharmacy already, you can get your medicine immediately. Remember to take a credit card to pay for the appointment (about €25) and any medication.

Dryer
The dryer is in the laundry room next to the washing machine. There are also clothes horses available because the French sun will dry your items very quickly.
On the dryer screen if there is a light on above “Nettoyer filtres” then you have to clean the lint from the filter, otherwise it’ll take ages to dry your clothes. To clean it, open the door and pull up the filter and take the lint out.
